Public speaking and a word on love.

My biggest presentation to date? A packed 230-person auditorium at the Assante Wealth annual conference— seats were full and some chose opted to sneak for stairwell or in the back landing (standing room only). It was my TED Talk moment… and the topic? Break-ups! The memories of many large lectures during my undergrad years at UBC came flooding back and I had to keep it together - let’s talk tax, insurance and planning… literally cue the yawns but somehow the exchange took off - I am passionate about this subject. Circling back…

Historically speaking, and technically so too, the topic is not exactly the kind of thing that screams “edge-of-your-seat,” but by the end, we were late for lunch and patio sessions—because a few advisors couldn’t help but stay behind and ask one more question. And then one more after that.

I had 45 minutes. Tight runway. No fluff. But when you’re talking about the legal fine print that decides who gets what after death—and how one forgotten form can change everything—you realize just how much power is hiding in the margins of a client file.

That day, I didn’t just “present.” I told stories. I unraveled mistakes. I walked through heartbreaks and near-misses. And I reminded a room full of seasoned professionals that clarity in planning is an act of love.

It was law. It was legacy. And yes, it was a little bit of a lunch delay.

But trust me—no one complained.

🎧 A couple years back, I had the joy of recording a podcast as a member of TREPS along with a legal expert on this exact topic—same passion, same legal deep dive. You can listen here: https://open.spotify.com/episode/6wC64TtxSrhCvqDYafA2IJ
